Volvo 850 TDI 7 seater Estate, first registered late 1996.

Owned it since late 2001, when it was 5 years old with ~58,000 miles on the clock. It's now got ~175,000 miles, 14 years later.

It's always been reliable, never used any oil between changes and I've used Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Apart from brake pads/discs, rear shocks, cam belt changes and tyres and a few suspension joints it's only real problem was a failed water pump which cost about £300 with all the belts etc.

It has air conditioning which works well and a sun roof which doesn't. I can explain what is wrong, it's an easy fix if you can get the part.

It has a tow-bar with working electrics, used only rarely, mostly for carrying mountain bikes.

The tyres are recent and are Pirelli P6000, all with lots of tread. It was lent to my daughters friend who is a service manager at Mercedes in Oxford while he waited for his new lease car. While at Mercedes in Oxford they put new front brake hoses on it, tweaked the brakes and MOT'd it until June 9th 2016. The mechanics all rated the car as very good. They put a Mercedes rear boot liner in it, which fits ok.

It's not been crashed or bent since I've owned it and almost certainly not before.

As for economy, it's got a 65 litre tank and does about 700 miles on a tank. I calculate it does just over 45 mpg in mixed driving, it can do 50 mpg on a long run and I once drove from Nottingham to Spalding and back doing 60 mpg driving no faster than 55 mph.

The engine is a 5 cylinder VW diesel, like they fit to VW/Audi and VW camper vans. It has a distinctive throaty sound. It's very easy to drive long distances, I've driven non-stop to Elgin. It's been to Stockholm, across Europe to Freiburg and done lager runs to Calais fully loaded to the roof with no problem.

The radio is original, sounds great with lots of speakers.

The interior was originally the cloth/leather mix but I changed it for a full black leather interior some years ago. The front drivers seat is an electric 3 position memory one and it works ok.


I'd put a notional value of £1,000 on it and wouldn't sell it for less as I know it;'s a good car & I'd keep it as a spare car.
