For sale – a manual gearbox 1997 BMW 528i SE Touring in very nice original condition, and with an excellent service history with just 2 previous owners.

R547 HAN was supplied by Royal Ascot BMW (which later became William Jacks Sunningdale, and then Sytner Sunningdale) on 21st November 1997 to its first owner, a local lady who kept the car for 14 years, covering just 42,000 miles in that time. It was then purchased in February 2011 by a Mr Whiting of Chelmsford, who had the car maintained at BMW specialists PMW Ltd of Chelmsford, and later when he moved house, Mtek Northampton took over the servicing and maintenance. Mr Whiting kept the car for 6 years and did a lot of motorway commuting, adding 100,000 miles and a stack of service and maintenance receipts for work done during his tenure. I bought the car in March 2017 at 143,000 miles, and the odometer reading is now 148,935. Five green service lights remain, and the MOT runs to July 2018.

The service record shows 15 stamps, details as follows:

17.2.17           143,984           Insp I                                       Mtek Northampton

Until mid-2014, the car was a low mileage example with 87,000 miles covered at a rate of around 5,000 miles per year. In the last 3 years a further 60,000 miles have been added, mostly motorway miles commuting between Northampton and Sheffield. It was rigorously maintained during this time.

The car is in lovely original order, with some minor blemishes to the paint as one would expect of a 20-year old car, but with no corrosion aside from a couple of tiny bubbles on the lower leading edge of the rear wheel arches where they meet the sills. The rest of the Sterling Silver paint appears original and retains a good shine, apart from a small patch around the kidney grille on the bonnet, where some stone chips have been poorly attended to and the lacquer is patchy.

The interior of the car is again in very good condition, with little or no wear evident on the black leather seats and steering wheel. The carpets, dashboard, door cards and headlining are all excellent.
Some points to note:
- Air conditioning is weak/non existent
- Kidney grille trim loose one side
- Engine under tray missing
- Dog guard netting should retract into load cover – it doesn’t!
- Few dings and scuffs to bumper corners

Significant issues:
1. Rear self levelling suspension – there is a warning light on the dash for this, and if the car is left for a few days, then the nearside rear sags so there must be an air leak somewhere. As soon as the ignition is switched on, the compressor starts and the car returns to correct height and is fine when driving. I have removed, re-greased and refitted the height level sensors but this has made no difference.

Brake pad wear warning light on dash. I’ve replaced the rear discs, pads, hand brake shoes and wear indicators but the warning light is still on. Could be duff signal or maybe front pads need doing, but they look OK .

The car runs on original 15” BMW alloy wheels with Uniroyal RainExpert tyres with plenty of tread.
