Description:

BMW 728i Sport – 2001 Factory genuine, Low Mileage, E38

73,000 genuine miles from new.

June 2001 build date, registered November 2001 on a 51 plate – one of the last!

Exterior finished in Titan Silver – a great colour on an E38.

Interior – black leather multi-adjustable electric sport seats, electric tilt and slide steering wheel. 3 memory settings for steering wheel, seats and mirrors.

Factory genuine sport package (P337A) – seats, anthracite headliner, rear differential, high-stall torque converter, sport suspension, M-steering wheel, M- parallel wheels, shadow-line trim.

4 owners – (2 owners from same family for 17 years) 1 of these owners was added to the log book purely for the sale of the car, so technically a 3 owner car including myself.

Service history – fully logged service book with some receipts.

MOT – February 2024

Solid car – one of the best I have owned/seen. Jacking points and sills are solid with no rust or rot.

Fuel tank – solid, no holes, leaks or whiffs of petrol which is typical with an E38 due to steel fuel tank.

Bodywork – great condition, a few dings, surface corrosion corrections but no rot. I would describe the car as extremely clean but not concourse.

Underside - car is solid, jacking points and sills are clean and rot free. Underside is stone chipped, undersealed and treated with Lanoguard. This includes the fuel tank for added peace of mind and protection.

Engine – spot on, plenty of torque and power just as you would expect from BMW's bulletproof M52 unit.

Gearbox – smooth and shifts exactly as ZF intended in D, S and M modes. Kickdown works as intended.

Wheels – slight curbing, could be refurbed but that would take away the factory finish.

Tyres – Conti Sport 5’s upfront, Conti Sport 2’s at the rear.

Drive – incredible, exactly how an E38 should be. Steering is tight and solid and cruises lovely and stable at speed.

Infotainment – Sat Nav works, TV (analogue), 6 x CD changer, Cassette and on-board computer. Car phone is missing.

Maintenance in my ownership.

Genuine BMW cam shaft sensor.

Genuine Bosch/BMW ABS Pre-charge pump.

Oil change, air filter and pollen filters @ 69,392 and 72,400 miles.

New NGK R spark plugs x 6.

2 x new rear Boge/Sachs shock absorbers.

H&R sport springs x 4 – stage 2 front, stage 1 rear.

2 x Febi front upper thrust arms - no shimmy!

2 x Meyle HD fromt drop links.

Front brakes – 2 x new Brembo discs and 4 x Brembo brake pads.

Rear brakes - 4 x new Brembo brake pads.

Battery - brand new Bosch S4 heavy duty battery.

Weather Strips – rubbers above the side trim have been replaced to freshen the car up, again, all E38’s at this stage won’t have the original trim in place as the originals tend to fall to pieces due to weathering.

Niggles

It’s a 21-year-old car, the last of the e38’s so you won’t find a younger one. As mentioned above, the has had a few areas of surface corrosion that I have treated and touched in. There are a few dinks on the car (spent some time in London) but this shouldn’t detract from the overall presentation.

The sound through the speakers can be intermittent, my last e38’s had this issue and relates back to the radio module in the boot – some days it works fine and others you have to wiggle the connection in the boot for the sound to transmit to the speakers.

Dead pixels on dash – again, some days you will get full mileage reading on display and others you won’t, a common issue and if I was to retain the car, a £120 to fix is worth doing.

Bonnet opening – requires you to wedge the bonnet pull inside the car to open, the cable has stretched but this has never concerned me. Bonnet closes and locks as it should.

1 x key – I wrote to the last owner of the car to establish if they had spare keys and any further paperwork/receipts but didn’t get a response. A new key from BMW is around £135 + VAT last time I visited them.

Summary

The 728i sport is the one to have, people underestimate the M52 engines in these cars but they truly are the best. Yes, a V8 sounds nice but they are nowhere near as reliable and as easy to work on.

If you have got this far through the advert you will know how well renowned the E38’s are, they truly are the best generation 7 series that are highly reliable and can still be used daily. My car has had a lot of the major work carried out just within the last 12 months alone, suspension and brakes being a main area.

I would confidently say that given the mileage, my experience and knowledge of E38’s that this is one of the best available today – price and appreciation for these cars has got a lot of traction recently and values are continuing to rise. The overall condition of the car is very clean, it always gets compliments and people still think it is a fairly new car!

The reason for sale is that I don't use the car as often as I would like to, also, after owning a number of E38's it is now time for me to move on an explore other avenues.
